I've always been interested in fire prevention. I found it interesting and fun. That is- until a class I conducted in a first grade classroom saved an entire family from a fire in their apartment. The front page of the newspaper quoted the mother thanking her twin first graders for hounding her to buy a smoke detector after "a fireman" came to their class. They bought one, and it melted into a blob on the floor a week later- after alerting them to the fire.
My heart stopped. I'd never pulled a family from a burning building, or saved a family with a defibrillator. But I did it with a smoke detector in my pocket and a dead battery. My life was changed. Although I have since been promoted out of public education, I am still heavily involved and am pushing towards the creation of Mentor Safety Village. Please check out our website and see what we have planned! Always looking for more ideas and opinions.
I'm happy to have found your organization and look forward to supporting it any way I can. Don
